This led to a power struggle between the two most powerful Imperial noble houses, led by Duke Otto von Braunschweig and Marquis Wilhelm von Littenheim, who were positioning their children to be the new monarch, and the rising progressive forces led by the young admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm, who was joined by the late Kaiser Friedrich's prime minister Klaus von Lichtenlade. The Empire was left in a crisis when Emperor Friedrich IV died in the fall of 797 UC (488 IC / 3597 CE ) without an appointed heir.
